Enjoy Summer but be Safe

Posted on 13 July 2012 by admin

Doesn’t it feel like a little too much when we talk about sweltering sun, heat warnings and heat waves in the GTA when our parents tell us that the temperatures in New Delhi and Islamabad can rise up to 48 and 45 degree Celsius? Regardless we are in Canada now and have become quite used to relatively moderate summer temperatures and extreme cold winters.

As the summer season ripens, you see kids running around on the streets and on your drive ways. It really is fun to watch them grow and be engaged in sports that demand some physical activity. It is also a nice break for them from video games.

While kids are playing soccer, basketball, hockey, or skate boarding on the streets, drivers need to be careful in how they drive in their respective local streets as well as on the roads where bicyclists and motorcyclists share roads.

While it would be ideal for kids to be playing at recreation centres set up by various municipalities and at community centres, it may not always be convenient for parents to take them to recreations centres every day or even every other day. By the same token there are a limited number of spots. What has to be noted though is that various municipalities do offer a number of different programs to kids whereby they can learn to play various sports and learn swimming.

On the other hand, while on some major roads motorists need to be cautious as bicyclists and motorcyclists share lanes with them. Although it would be best to have their own lanes on the roads, cash strapped governments cannot afford to do so. In the meantime, these bicyclists and motorcyclists should take the precautionary measures of ensuring that they wear helmets and other protective gear. Additionally many times, you see them driving without bothering to see left or right while making turns or crossing red lights and so on. This is not to suggest that car drivers are always on their best behaviour.

Enjoy but keeping safe must be a priority is a message for everyday.
